IS CHEWING GUM GOOD FOR YOUR ORAL HEALTH?
Not all gum is created equal. When it comes to your oral health, chewing sugar-free gum is proven to help protect and improve the health of your teeth.
Clinical studies have shown that chewing sugar-free gum following meals can help prevent tooth decay. This is due to increased saliva production, which helps neutralize and clear away the acids caused by food as it’s broken down by the bacteria in the mouth. While chewing gum containing xylitol has the added benefit of preventing the growth of Streptococcus mutans – one of the oral bacteria known to cause cavities.
Chewing sugar-free gum is good in situations when you can’t brush and floss, but it does NOT replace the need for daily brushing and flossing. It is simply a supplement to your oral care routine. We recommend brushing twice a day and flossing every night.
If you experience jaw pain or have TMJ you should refrain from chewing gum and talk to your dentist about what options are available to you.
